The Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) was launched by Minister Michael Creed TD on Wed 30th Jan 2019. Funding of 20 million euro has been made available by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) for the pilot which aims to capture on-farm liveweights of approx. 500,000 cows and their calves. Almost 20,000 farms have signed up to the scheme. 

What do I need to do for the BEEP scheme? 

If you have signed up to the BEEP scheme you will need tom complete a number of actions in order to receive payment for eligible animals. 

There are three simple actions that you need to complete the requirements:

  1. Register your weighing scales
  2. Weigh your Suckler calves and their dams on the same day.
  3. Submit this information to ICBF (Don't worry Herdwatch will help you here)

How do I register my weighing scales for the BEEP scheme? 

You will need to register the weighing scales on the ICBF website, it does not matter if you own the scales or if you borrow/rent one. It must be registered on the ICBF website to be eligible.  

Step to register you scales on the ICBF website

  1. Log into you ICBF account here (www.ICBF.com) 
  2. Go to the services tab on the blue menu.
  3. Click on the "BEEP" button.
  4. Click on either "View/Register Own scales" or "View/Register third party scales". 
  5.  Click "Register/Add Scales".
  6.  Enter the Make/Model of Scales, Year of Purchase and the Serial number. 
  7. Tap Save. 

What animals do I need to weigh for the BEEP scheme? 

All suckler calves (i.e. calves from beef sire and a beef dam) born from 1st Jul 2018 – 30th June 2019 and their dams must be weighed before they are weaned. Cows and calves must be weighed on the same day.

When should I weigh my cattle for the BEEP scheme? 

You must weigh your Suckler calves and cows between the 8th Mar – 1st Nov 2019.

Whats the best age to weigh calves for the BEEP scheme? 

The best time to weigh a suckler calf is around 6 months old. At 6 months old, the calf’s dam will be no more than 4-5 months pregnant. Remember both the cow and calf must be weighed on the same day

Where do I record the weights for the BEEP scheme ? 

You can record all your weights for the BEEP scheme in the Herdwatch app. The Herdwatch app will tell you how much weight your calf has gain since birth and it will also send the weighing information securely to ICBF. This is the most important part of the scheme.
